  An Ancient Holiday

  The middle of inter has long been a ti of celebration around the orld. Centuries before the arrival of the man called Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of inter. The Norse believed that each spark from the fire represented a ne pig or calf that ould be born during the ing year.

For many, it as the only ti of year hen they had a supply of fresh at. In addition, most ine and beer made during the year as finally fernted and ready for drinking.

  In Germany, people honored the pagan god Oden during the mid-inter holiday. Germans ere terrified of Oden, as they believed he made nocturnal flights through the sky to observe his people, and then decide ho ould prosper or perish. Because of his presence, many people chose to stay inside.
